Child Care & Early Education

Pediatric First Aid & CPR — Knowledge Prep (Child Care)

A complete knowledge-prep course in pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED use for people who care for infants and young children — child care staff, teachers, nannies, camp counselors, and parents. It teaches the recognition, steps, and reasoning behind the emergencies you are most likely to face: performing CPR on an infant and a child (chain of survival, checking responsiveness and breathing, compression depth and rate of about 100–120 per minute, the 30:2 single-rescuer ratio, infant two-finger and two-thumb technique versus child technique, rescue breaths, and using an AED with pediatric pads); relieving choking in a conscious and unconscious infant and child (back blows and chest thrusts for infants, abdominal thrusts for children, and what to do when the child becomes unresponsive); caring for common injuries (bleeding and wounds, shock, thermal and chemical burns, fractures and sprains and splinting, head, neck and spinal injury, dental injuries, nosebleeds, eye injuries, and bites and stings); and managing sudden illness and medical emergencies (allergic reaction and anaphylaxis with an epinephrine auto-injector, asthma and inhalers, seizures, diabetic emergencies, poisoning with Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, fever and heat and cold emergencies, fainting, and when to call 911 versus the parents). Every unit has plain-language lessons, comparison tables, exam traps, a knowledge check, and a randomized mastery check, ending with a 50-question mock exam and a spaced-repetition flashcard deck of high-yield facts. Note that child care staff are generally required to hold current pediatric First Aid and CPR certification as a condition of employment. This is the KNOWLEDGE portion only. Actual First Aid/CPR/AED certification requires an in-person, hands-on skills check with an approved provider (e.g., American Heart Association or American Red Cross). This course is study prep and does not by itself certify you. Free.
